National Public Radio is fostering the Local News Initiative (LNI) to help build the news gathering and presentation capacity of its member stations. The goal is to test new ways of working together that will make NPR stations more vital, valued and central to the audiences in their communities.

In 2008, more than 136 stations were using the LNI to develop new approaches to programming collaboration and development.
